ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT &
POLICY RESEARCH INSTITUTE

In 2014, EMPRI was designated as the state nodal agency for Climate Change in Karnataka to provide technical support in conducting research, trainings and capacity building in climate change programs. The “Karnataka State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) – 1st Assessment” was prepared by EMPRI in 2015. The Karnataka State Action Plan on Climate Change (KSAPCC) has outlined various challenges and has also given feasible action points to be implemented by various sectors of administration in the state. During the year 2016-17, Government of Karnataka provided funds for establishing the centre for climate change.

 

MISSION & VISION

  • Organizing capacity building trainings to officers of Government and other institutions on Environmental issues.

  • Conducting policy and applied research on concurrent environmental issues.

  • Providing consultancy services on environment to government departments and other organizations and Industries.

  • Sensitizing students on Environmental matters through Eco-clubs in Schools and Colleges.

  • Maintenance of Environmental Information System (ENVIS) center for disseminating environment related information.

  • Preparing the State of Environment Report for Karnataka.

  • Preparing the State Action Plan on Climate Change.

  • As a State Nodal Agency for Climate Change

  • The preparing and updating of KSAPCC

  • Conducting research, training and capacity building programs

  • Implementation of KSAPCC by the respective sectors

  • Dissemination of Climate Change information to all stakeholders

EMPRI has taken up many initiatives aimed at the generation of awareness among various stakeholders, imparting training, capacity building and manpower development and has also coordinated with different universities, premier research institutions, Government Departments and NonGovernmental Organizations (NGO) to pursue theme-based scientific research on climate change and its impacts. In 2016, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, sanctioned a project, “Establishing/Strengthening the state climate change centre/cell under National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change (NMSKCC) (State Climate Change Centre-National Mission for Strategic Knowledge on Climate Change) in the state of Karnataka” to EMPRI. The objective of the project was to establish a Karnataka Strategic Knowledge Centre for Climate Change (KSKCCC) with advanced research capabilities to take up research studies on climate change issues.
